Luke 1:46b-55

46 And Mary said:  “My soul glorifies the Lord 47and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, 48 for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant.  From now on all generations will call me blessed, 49for the Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is his name.  50 His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.  51 He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.  52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble.  53 He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty.  54 He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful 55 to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”

What is Christmas without Christmas carols? And this should be sung as one.

As I read the passage (over and over) many things came into thought. How excited Mary was….the praising of God….her humility ….her faithfulness….. Do we share the same excitement about bringing Jesus into the lives of people as Mary did?

Of course any expecting mother is very excited about what’s to come but in Mary’s case she has been given the privilege of bringing Jesus into the world. Not just a baby Jesus but the Light of the World. Not sure if I would see it as a blessing or a curse. That’s a tall order to fill—just to think of having that responsibility of bringing Jesus into the world, the Son of God. WOW! I put myself in Mary’s shoes and I can’t even begin to imagine. Yet Mary is filled with such gladness, praise and humility.

Mary sings of such joy from her heart.  Truly excited, she lifts God up and all His wonder. She seems honestly humbled as she realizes what is happening and that God has chosen her.

Like Mary, we as Christians have been given that same privilege of bringing Jesus into the lives of the people.  We don’t have the same responsibility or scenario as Mary. We now have the responsibility of spreading the great news of Jesus Christ to the world. What a privilege it is to be used by God in this way.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for the faith we find in Mary. What a role model she is. Teach us to sing songs of praises to You and be humble to the task you have given us in spreading the Light, Your Light of the world.  Please give to each of us as merry of a Christmas as You did to Mary. In Jesus’s name, Merry Christmas! Amen
