I’ve been texting back and forth all week with Shawn. No, Shawn has not been in the office next to mine here at church. Shawn and Carson Hale actually traveled to Les Cayes, Haiti this week to check on the progress of the home for disabled women we have been working to build for 5 years. Earlier in the year, we sent some money that had been donated and we knew then that the house was very close to being far enough along and that they were getting ready to move some young disabled women into the home. What a wonderful surprise when I heard from Shawn that 10 young disabled women have been able to move in along with their teacher and are now living in the home you all helped to build.
Our mission at Wright’s Chapel is to make disciples of Jesus Christ who will transform the world for God. That is what you are doing with your support of this project, transforming the world. We have said before that because of the poverty in the country, the disabled of Haiti, and especially women, are truly the least of these among us. What a difference you are making in the lives of these young women and their families as you provide not only a place to live, but training to provide them marketable skills.
I’m not sure any of us who were there 5 years ago and spent time moving rocks with five gallon buckets to fill in the foundation ever thought any young women might actually live in this home. But they are. It took Moses 40 years to lead his people to the promised land. It has been five years and you’ve provided a new home and new hope for ten young disabled women.
It is still up in the air right now, but we are hoping to be able to take another team of volunteers back to Haiti next June. There is still some political uncertainty that is causing out breaks and protests that can make travel in Haiti more than difficult. We will continue to communicate with our partners, assess the situation and plan accordingly. Even if we aren’t able to go to Haiti, there is still much we can do from here. Now, I can’t wait for Shawn and Carson to get home and to provide a greater update on the mission and work of God that we have a chance to be a part of. Thank you for all you have done and thank you for all you are doing and thank you for all I know you will do for these women. I’m smiling, because I’m pretty sure Jesus is smiling!
