Mission Week

My first summer youth mission trip was in 9th grade. We went to West Virginia to work on homes with Appalachia Service Project. I have been on a mission trip almost every summer since then both as a participant as a leader. Almost 30 years of mission trips! This summer will be different. This will be the first summer in a long time where I will not be able to lead a trip. I know it’s for the best but I will still miss it.

Because of this reality we started thinking about what alternatives do we have because we still want to be in service to God and our community. So Charles, Susan, and I began brainstorming ideas. Out of that came Mission Week! The week of June 29th through July 3rd we will focus on serving our community. Below you will see that we set up some opportunities locally that you can sign up for (not all require pre registration). We are limited by numbers so it’s important to sign up in advance. But you’ll also see some ideas of things you can do on your own. We also encourage you to be creative and find ways to serve your neighbors and community. Then we encourage you to share your stories of service with us. This will be a great time for the church to make a huge difference in our community!

Monday June 29th: 3:00-5:00 food donation drive through- Stop by the church and drop off food donations for our Mobile Ministry. We will also accept financial donations for the Mobile Ministry as well.

Tuesday: Cindy’s Closet- help sort Cindy’s Closet donations at the church. Contact Connie Devenport (connie@wrightschapel.org or by calling the church 804-448-1251) to sign up. Limited numbers available, all ages welcome, and a mask is required for every volunteer.

Wednesday: Ladysmith Rd clean up 7:30am-10am- Meet at Lake Land Or clubhouse to help clean up Ladysmith Rd. Contact Shawn Kiger (shawn@wrightschapel.org) to sign up. Youth can attend with an adult.

Wednesday: Lumberjacks 8am-10am- Come help the Lumberjacks at the church move a wood pile. All ages are welcome. Closed toed shoes, gloves, and water bottles required.

Thursday: Mobile Ministry food sort 10am-12- Help sort food donations for Mobile Ministry at the church. All ages are welcome. Limited to 10 people and everyone must wear a mask. Contact Tina Mylinski to sign up.

Friday: Mobile Ministry food packing 10am-12- Bag mobile ministry food to be handed out at their next event. All ages are welcome. Limited to 10 people and everyone must wear a mask. Contact Tina Mylinski to sign up.

If you are unable to get in on one of these opportunities here are some additional ideas!

  • Write a note to a church member
  • Take a meal to a neighbors house
  • Cut a neighbors grass
  • Take cookies to the fire department
  • Write notes to the nursing home
  • Do some weeding around the church and playground
  • Come up with your own creative ideas of serving the community!

I’m gonna miss not going on a mission trip this year. But I’m excited about a new way to serve our community. I can’t wait to see the impact you are going to have as a church!
