Mildred’s Kids

In the spring of 2003 my daughter Sophia suffered a massive seizure and stroke.  She was six years old. Doctors have never been able to tell us for sure what caused the episode that left her brain damaged.  Whatever the cause, it severely affected her speech and social development.  My wife Amy and I have gone through many joys and sorrows, spiritual ups and downs over the past 12 years as we raised our child with multiple disabilities. Wright’s Chapel UMC has been a huge support for us in caring for and nurturing Sophia.  Mildred Durrett who died in 2014 at the age of 93 was a large part of that support.IMG_3156  For 12 years Mildred sat with Sophia every Sunday during worship so that I could preach and so that my wife Amy could have at least an hour to just sit and enjoy worship and not have to worry about occupying her.  Mildred had a heart for children with special needs which she shared with Sophia. I was so happy when we were able to start what we have called Mildred’s Kids, a ministry for special needs individuals and their families.

Our Mildred’s Kids ministry is run by trained teachers and volunteers and is designed to provide opportunities for individuals with special needs to get together with other adults and youth for fun and spiritual growth.   The program also provides an opportunity for the parents and guardians of children with special needs to get together for support and information sharing, as well as time to take a breath and relax knowing that their children are well cared for.  We meet on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 2:00-3:30 and we would love to have you and your child join us. Please call or email us to let us know you’re coming so that we can plan accordingly. If you would like to volunteer with this ministry please call so that we can get you signed on.

Even though Mildred is not here to sit with Sophia each Sunday, her love of children with special needs lives on at Wright’s Chapel.
